Billy Graham Defends Chick-Fil-A

Special Report - July 30, 2012

The ongoing attacks against Chick-fil-A have encouraged renowned evangelist and native North Carolinian Billy Graham to publicly express his support for the pro-family fast food chain and its president, Dan Cathy. Last Thursday, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association issued an official statement from Reverend Graham about the controversy surrounding some public comments that Dan Cathy made to the media about the Biblical definition of marriage (see our previous story for more).

In his July 26 statement, Rev. Graham expressed his “support for my good friends Truett Cathy and his son Dan Cathy, and for their strong stand for the Christian faith.” He went on to praise Chick-fil-A as a company that “serves each of its customers with excellence, and treats everyone like a neighbor.” Rev. Graham also directly addressed the criticism over Mr. Cathy’s statements in support of traditional marriage. “Each generation faces different issues and challenges, but our standard must always be measured by God's word,” Graham said. “I appreciate the Cathy family's public support for God's definition of marriage.”

Rev. Graham concluded by encouraging Americans to join him in supporting Chick-fil-A this Wednesday, August 1, during “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” which was organized by Governor Mike Huckabee. It is the second of two national events, including last Wednesday’s “National Eat-At-Chick-fil-A Day” organized by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). “As the son of a dairy farmer who milked many a cow,” Rev. Graham said in the statement, “I plan to ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ and show my support by visiting Chick-fil-A” on Wednesday.

This is the second time this year that Rev. Graham has made a public statement about the importance of the Biblical definition of marriage. In May, he issued a statement in support of North Carolina’s Marriage Protection Amendment, which was approved by a majority of North Carolina voters in a statewide referendum on May 8, 2012.
